"Asleep" by The Smiths

In the novel Perks of Being of Wallflower, Charlie listens to the song "Asleep" by The Smiths. He gets this song from a CD his sister's boyfriend gave to her. Although his sister does not bother with the CD, Charlie listens to it and this particular song speaks to him.

The overall lyrical theme of the song is fearing the next day and not wanting to wake up. This relates to Charlie in this part of the book because of the devastating parts of his life that he does not want to relive everyday. For example, both his friend Michael and his aunt who he looked up to have died. Also, he has started school and does not feel like he fits in. In his writing it is apparent that he feels this way with the his distant and unemotional wording and sentence structure.

Letter 1 Response

Dear Charlie,

I am sorry to hear about your loss. From your letter, I understand that Michael was a friend of yours. I have one piece of advice for you, do not beat yourself so much over his death. I understand that you are sad, I would be too, but it was not you fault. In your letter you said that you wish Michael had come to you, that you thought that you were closer than that. However, issues that he may have been facing may not be something that Michael was comfortable sharing with anyone. I understand what you meant when you wrote about the guidance counselor. I would not feel comfortable speaking to someone I did not know about such a personal topic.

In your first letter, although the topics seem like it would be emotional for you, you write without much emotion. You mention both the death of Michael and about your aunt. Why is this? Are you hiding something?

You look up to your aunt, don't you? In the last paragraphs of your letter you spoke of her and her time with your family before her death. You spoke highly of her and how she stopped your father from beating you. I'm sorry that you lost a person that supported you and one that you admired. You seemed close.

I will leave you with these final words, there are times where everyone feels alone, but when you find that one person to confide in, you are able to share your deepest secrets with that person. I hope you have found that person in your friend that you are writing to. I look forward to hearing about the rest of your freshmen year of high school and the relationships and events that happen through the year.

Love always,
Tarini
